Las sobretensiones transitorias que miden tan solo unos pocos cientos de voltios \/ pico acumulan suficiente fuerza para da\u00f1ar equipos electr\u00f3nicos sensibles sin posibilidad de reparaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>El elemento de voltaje de una sobretensi\u00f3n transitoria es recibido como una bofetada en los circuitos integrados (CI) modernos, es decir, chips de computadora. Y mientras que una serie de bofetadas repetidas y que se repiten r\u00e1pidamente en la cara dar\u00edan como resultado un dolor intenso, m\u00faltiples oleadas transitorias consecutivas que ocurren en r\u00e1pida sucesi\u00f3n har\u00e1n que un chip de computadora que de otro modo est\u00e9 sano fallar\u00e1 catastr\u00f3ficamente.<\/p>\n<p>Es prudente mitigar el da\u00f1o potencial asociado con los transitorios. Esa tarea se logra con los dispositivos de protecci\u00f3n contra sobretensiones (SPD). Los SPD tienen un prop\u00f3sito fundamental: proteger equipos electr\u00f3nicos cr\u00edticos desviando niveles intensos de corriente transitoria lejos de ellos mientras se limitan las amplitudes de voltaje correspondientes a niveles seguros.
